Description

Objects of Dumfries Burns Club:

-          To celebrate in a suitable manner the anniversary of the Poet’s birth, and to honour his memory.

-          To discharge the obligations laid upon the Club by the testamentary disposition of Colonel William Nicol Burns with respect to Burns House and the Mausoleum.

The Dumfries Burns Club was founded in 1820, and has celebrated the birth of Robert Burns, and honoured his memory since then. Club members meet during the year to learn more about and celebrate the life and works of Robert Burns whilst enjoying social events.

The Club has a remarkable collection of Robert Burns related artefacts and literature which are on loan to, and cared for by, Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Museum Services (Burns House, Robert Burns Centre) and Heritage Team (The Ewart Library).

Life Membership of Dumfries Burns Club was given to J.M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan, following his generosity when he paid £400 in 1918 to purchase Burns relics on behalf of the Club.

Honorary Members of the Club have included: The Poet’s three sons and Sir Walter Scott.

New members are welcome - Contact DBC Secretary for a Membership form if you wish to join and support the Club
