Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels (now incorporating Red Squirrels in South Scotland)

Last updated: 12/01/2013

Description

SSRS's aim is to maintain south Scotland as a stronghold of our native red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) which has disappeared from most of Britain. From now till March 2014 the project will focus on: 1) Halting or slowing down the spread of the deadly Squirrelpox virus, which is spread by grey squirrels and 2) Controlling grey squirrels sufficiently to allow red squirrel populations in south Scotland to survive. the public is encouraged to get involved in the trap-loan scheme and surveying in the spring, as well as submitting sightings of red and grey squirrels on the website.
