Valuing our Council’s workforce.

Monday, 07 November 2022 13:07

Our Council’s highly valued workforce is extremely diverse and complex, reflecting the range and type of services which our Council currently delivers. Members of the Council’s Economy and Resources Committee (15 Nov) will receive two reports on staffing at the Council: The People Strategy update and the Annual Workforce Report.

To understand our workforce better, we review and report on a wide range of HR metrics designed to provide insight, and to recognise the contributions made by our staff across the Council.

Our Council’s People Strategy sets out our ambition to be a great employer and our proposals to ensure that we have a workforce that will deliver on our aims for the future and our council vision ‘dedicated to creating opportunity for all, we’ll support ambition, promote prosperity and establish Dumfries and Galloway as the best place to live, work and learn’.

We continue to ensure that we have a flexible, multi skilled workforce. to help us understand our future workforce needs. and to identify opportunities to change the way we work. We are learning lessons from working through COVID-19 and the impact on our
workforce and working practices. The key areas linked to our workforce are:

• More staff working from home – technology, health and safety and wellbeing are key areas of focus.
• New recruitment tools – to improve the candidate journey, review of the end-to-end process for recruitment.
• Improving customer experience – developing the skills frameworks to meet skills gaps identified in the customer experience, digital and customer case skills.
• Changing work patterns – 9 to 5 working does not meet all the requirements of our customers – how can new work patterns help our customers and our staff?
• Digital by default – developing our digital capability to facilitate hybrid working styles in the post-COVID world. Ensuring we are digitally inclusive in how we work; improving skills and competence to work collaboratively, autonomously and protect our wellbeing in digital ways of working.

Chair of E&R Committee, Cllr Katie Hagmann said: “The people who make D&G council are our most important asset. We appreciate our staff and know that they are high performing and help the Council to meet its priorities and programmes of work by providing quality services and support to everyone within Dumfries and Galloway. We are proud of our dedicated workforce and have great plans to support them in the future. We do currently have vacancies for posts across the workforce and we would be interested in hearing from people from all walks of life and experience – come and work for us in an exciting environment!”

Vice Chair, Cllr Sean Marshall said: “We are proud of our dedicated workforce and we are very supportive of them. To deliver changes and improve services to our communities we must continue to develop a culture of high performance across our Council, maximise employee engagement and create a working environment where everyone can have a rewarding work life. I would encourage people with the correct skills and experience to look at our recruitment posts online and apply if they are interested. We welcome applications from all.”
