DFN Project SEARCH Dumfries and Galloway is pleased to announce the continued success of its partnership programme, which aims to support individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other support needs in securing potential paid employment.

Since its inception, DFN Project SEARCH Dumfries and Galloway has been dedicated to providing individuals with ASD with the necessary skills and opportunities to thrive in the workplace. Through a comprehensive training and internship programme, participants have been empowered to develop their professional abilities, gain valuable work experience, and ultimately secure meaningful employment.

The programme’s success can be attributed to the collaborative efforts of DFN Project SEARCH Dumfries and Galloway partner organisations – Dumfries and Galloway Council and Dumfries and Galloway College. By working closely with local businesses, educational institutions, and community support services, the programme has been able to tailor internships to match the unique interests and talents of participants. Moreover, ongoing mentorship and support have ensured that participants are well-equipped to navigate the challenges of the workplace and succeed in their chosen careers.

Over eight years, the Project SEARCH programme has consistently achieved remarkable success. In the recently concluded academic year of 2021/22, we are proud to report that eight of the programme interns secured competitive paid employment in the region.

The achievement serves as a significant milestone and is a testament to the unwavering dedication and commitment of the programme’s participants, mentors, and partners towards providing meaningful and impactful opportunities for individuals in the region.

The Project Search programme is currently running its ninth intake of interns, with potential placement rotations over the next year. Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Employability and Skills Service is delighted to continue working in supporting individuals with autism spectrum disorder and other support needs in securing meaningful employment opportunities in the Dumfries and Galloway region.

Cllr Ian Carruthers, Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Economy and Resources Committee Chair said: “Our partnership programme DFN Project Search Dumfries and Galloway has surpassed our expectations in terms of its positive impact on individuals with autism spectrum disorder. We are thrilled to witness the personal and professional growth of our participants as they secure paid employment and contribute to the local workforce.”

Cllr David Inglis, Vice Chair, said: “It's a testament to the quality of the programme, and the commitment of the partners and participants involved. We are confident this programme will continue to make a positive impact in the local community.”

Employability and Skills Delivery Team Leader, Greg Cameron, said: “The programme has always been successful in providing all participants with the skills and knowledge needed to take the next steps in their working journeys and we are incredibly proud to see that success and hard work being reflected in the achieved job outcomes, as well."

Anne Clark Curriculum Manager at Dumfries and Galloway College said: “The programme is a great example of joint partnership working and this is evidenced by the positive impact that the project has had with so many participants that have completed the programme within our region. We are proud to partner with the DFN Project SEARCH team and are confident that the programme will continue to be successful in Dumfries and Galloway.”

Marchbank Bakers, a local bakery, has been an instrumental partner in the programme, providing interns with a variety of opportunities. Chloe R. Marchbank, Partner, Marchbank Bakers, said: “Working alongside Project Search has been a rewarding experience for both management and team. We were approached to give both Abbie and Jamie a chance at employment. It has been a fantastic experience for us and truly enhanced our bakery team.”

Jack MacDonald is a Logistics Operator at Dumfries and Galloway Council. He is also a former intern of Project Search. Reflecting on the programme, Jack said: “After feeling burned out by studies during the difficult years following a pandemic, I was left yearning for a shot at some real work. Unsure of how to make that first step, however, I turned to Project SEARCH for guidance. Their support proved indispensable, as they were able to provide me with real experiences that eased me into working in an actual job setting with confidence, which led to my current paid position within the local council.”

DFN Project SEARCH Dumfries and Galloway remains committed to its mission of promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities for individuals with ASD and other support needs. By continuing to forge strong partnerships, providing tailored training, and offering ongoing support, the programme aims to empower even more individuals to achieve their employment goals and lead fulfilling lives.
