For several years, the Friends of the Archives of Dumfries and Galloway have been working closely with the Archivist to transcribe, index and explain each of the historical records below which are amongst the many collections held in Dumfries and Galloway Archives.
These indexes open up the contents of these diverse kinds of archives for research of all kinds or just to give a picture - by turns vivid, funny and pathetic - of life in Dumfries and Galloway in centuries past. Click on any title to explore them.
The indexing project is still on-going so existing indexes may expand and new indexes may be added as the project continues. Please let us know if you find any discrepancies or errors in this material.

Viewing Records
To view the records in any particular index click the record count or the View Records icon next to it.
Quick Search
Use the Quick Search box below to search all fields in all indexes at once. Click on the record count next to the relevant index to display the results. Prefix words with a minus sign to exclude them from the results.
Advanced Search
At the top of the records page for each index there is an Advanced Search link which displays search fields specific to the current index. Unlike Quick Search it is not currently possible to exclude results using a minus sign.
Project Descriptions
To view information about a particular index click on the record name (e.g. Dean of Guild Plans) or the Information icon next to it.
